Some technicians specialize in one type of appliance, such as air conditioners*, while others work with a variety of appliances, both large and small, which are used in homes and business establishments. There are approximately 42,000 appliance technicians employed in the United States.
The increasing use of appliances has created the need for qualified people to install, repair, and service them. Today’s service technicians need a different mix of knowledge and skills than needed by the appliance repair technicians of years ago. Today’s appliances often involve more complex electronic parts.

Then you'll learn how to in install, service, and repair heating and air conditioning systems* in residences and commercial establishments. Troubleshoot valves, compressors, water chillers, thermostats and heat pumps; fix defective connections, controls and switches, adjust refrigerant levels, and work with gas, oil and electric heat.
*The EPA requires that those working with refrigerants must be certified, and voluntary certifications include the National Appliance Service Technician Certification and the Certified Appliance Professional certification.
